Mamie Hansberry @ Rutgers for you! Be on time (or early) 3rd Floor Plangere Wiring Center, Murray Hall

Dear All,

As we’ve been discussing, Mamie Hansberry,  Loraine Hansberry sister, has been generous enough to come and share her personal experiences and more tomorrow.  If you can make it to class a little early, that would be great.  For those of you who have other commitments, please be prompt.

We may, as a class, have a chance to see the Crossroads’ production of the play if we play our cards right.  How do we do that?  By impressing the director of the Crossroads theater who will also be there.

We can’t go backwards, we’re in the middle of the raisin exploding

with a BAM!

So by way of finishing Baraka, introducing Baldwin, and refreshing your memories about the play, I have assembled the following power point show.  The important thing is to stay focused on your understanding of the play, or on how Sidney Lumet’s version of the play de-radicalizes the play’s explosive potential.  So keep in mind the text, the movie we watched, and also

THIS

“A Raisin in the Sun Debuts” (1955)

Algerian Independence (1959)

The Discourse on Colonialism (Cesaire) and The Wrethched of the Earth (Fanon) are disseminated in various Black radical periodicals in Harlem and San Francisco like,

The Panther

The Year Lorraine Hansberry Died (1965)

The Year Malcolm was Killed (1964)

Medgar Evers is Killed (1963)

The lynching of Emmet Till (1955)

You all are a curious loud group.  I love that about you.  Tomorrow, though, respect for our guest is

THE TOP PRIORITY

THAT MEANS

Please respect Mamie’s time by engaging her in intelligent and informed conversation.

We’re not quite sure what is going to happen tomorrow.

Mamie Hansberry may talk for eighty minutes or she may just entertain questions.  Be prepared either way.

How?  Just watch and remember!

AND…. THINK ABOUT HER PAINTINGS
